Alex,

The bug Ryan mentioned was fixed over a year ago. (Note his post on Aug 31, 2008)

We're not aware of any current trial licensing issues at this time, and would be happy to assist you with getting your trial going.

As we don't have your contact info, please contact us at sales@slickedit.com or call us at +1 919 473 0070 for assistance.

Thanks for your feedback!

That's really not something that is happening a lot...I'm sorry that it happened to you. I definitely do not expect it to happen again.

Basically, Core 3.4.x uses license files (and all versions going forward will do the same), but Core 3.3.x, which we still support, used activation (keys). Based on where the trial request comes from we generate either a file or a key, and you received the wrong one for your version due to a bug on the web side of things...not due to anything in SlickEdit Core or Flex.

We actually use Flex for standalone SlickEdit too. Ever since we ditched activation and went to file-based licensing it has been well received. Sorry for your troubles.

Hi Scott,

I absolutely agree that, as you said, "The choice to use it hinges heavily on the trial, and if the user can’t get the trial installed and doing spectacular feats in less than five minutes, then the opportunity is completely lost. The bottom line is that the most important software performance metric is not how fast my code works, but how fast the user can use it meaningfully."

That's why I'm somewhat disappointed that SlickEdit chose FlexNet as a licensing manager for SlickEdit Core. I've wrestled with this software program before when I used Matlab at a previous company - we'd spend an average of two to five days dealing with license-related technical problems every time we tried to get a new user or a new machine set up.

SlickEdit Core seems to have the same problems. I tried to get a trial license, but the website emailed me a key, not a license file as SE Core seems to want. Eric Williams, one of your salespeople, is doing his best to help me -- but as you said, this should be a 5-minute experience, not something that needs sales support just to get the trial to do something other than say "The chosen operation is not currently available" because of licensing issues.
