I also think you are marketing yourselves to an overly expert market. I'm a student who maintains a number of large web page collections. I would use the product to develop and clean up html, php, and some python.

I'd use the windows client after a gaming session, and I'd use the linux client in the mornings when I was trying to stay serious.

I'd still use your editor if it wasn't so damn expensive even though I don't need/know how to use half the features!

Do you really want to be shutting us noobs out of the market?

I tried out slickedit based on it working in linux and windows. Unfortunately you priced this editor way out of my range - I'm a student who dabs in python and php.

I think you'd get way more users, and potentially a more valuable user community if you charged a reasonable amount... like 45$, at least to students/non professionals.

I know you have a student rate, but its still high, and you charge for each operating system. Why not just throw them all together and charge one price?

Hi, and thanks for reading my article. My purpose in writing wasn't to convince you that SlickEdit is better than any particular editor. That's a topic for another article, 8^). I also wasn't trying to provide a comprehensive list of our time-saving features.

Instead, my purpose is to show the appropriate role of price in picking an editor. If mog is truly convinced that emacs is the best editor for him, then that's what he should use. As a long-time emacs user, I can readily show how SlickEdit has made me more productive.

I try to show how even a very small savings, like 1.6 minutes a day, is enough to pay for SlickEdit. By no means do I suggest that that is all you will save.

I interact with a lot of people making decisions about editors, and it's surprising how often I hear that they can find a cheaper editor. For such an important tool, price should take a back seat to productivity. In the end, the labor cost far overshadows the price of the tool.

I'm not sure that I buy the "1.6 minutes a day adds up" argument, but I'll give SlickEdit the benefit of the doubt based on your recommendation.

However, I'm confused by the rest of the bullet points. Eclipse seems to have all of these topics covered:

* Eclipse has "Open Declaration (F3)", which seems to provide the same functionality as SlickEdit's [CTRL + DOT].
* Eclipse displays a symbol's definition in a tooltip.
* Eclipse has syntax expansion (via [CTRL + Space].
* Eclipse has user definable code templates.
* Eclipse has a serviceable diff tool.

On top of that, Eclipse has myriad plug-ins that save me *way* more than 1.6 minutes per day.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I don't think that I can use your argument to get funding to buy SlickEdit. ;_;

its hard to justify paying 300 for an editor when the best, emacs, supports all features mentioned for free and is free as in freedom so you can make it better, so its really best of both worlds... ^_^
